Depeche Mode: Electronic music has its share of detractors. Critics have routinely thrown around adjectives such as “cold” and “soulless” to describe it and, in some cases, these words ring true. However, one of the most glaring and obvious exceptions to this rule is England’s own synth pioneers, Depeche Mode. Few singers have poured more passion and soul into their performance than Dave Gahan does every night, and just about nobody writes musical hooks with a better sense of melody than Martin Gore. And they have been doing it for years. While most electronic acts swirl around the outskirts of relative obscurity, Depeche Mode has topped the charts around the world, spitting out classic darkwave hits such as “Enjoy the Silence” and “Shake the Disease” with an ease and grace that leaves other keyboard-based acts scratching their heads. Godsmack: Remember when just about every singer on modern rock radio was attempting some sort of vaguely passable Eddie Vedder impression? Well, if you are having trouble recalling those days (or have wisely chosen to block them from your memory), Godsmack has returned to once again bring back the golden glory of those not-so-distant times. Providing post-grunge at its post-grungiest, Godsmack plastered the early part of the millennium with a string of hits that cemented them forever in comparison with such ultra classic (and highly respected) acts as Nickleback and Creed. Good company for sure. One thing you can count on - The House of Blues will be a sea of tribal armband tattoos and goatees come Aug. 8. Enjoy.
