There are several theories as to why Easter has traditionally been known for decking oneself out in stylish, new clothing. Some believe it started back in 300 A.D., when Roman emperor Constantine declared that his court, after weeks of wearing the same dull, boring clothes throughout Lent, must discard their old frocks and wear only their finest new clothing on Easter Sunday.
In our country, Easter traditions as we know it weren’t celebrated until after the Civil War, because prior to that, Puritans and Protestants didn’t really celebrate Easter – or much of anything, for that matter. After the war, however, the churches saw Easter as a source of hope for Americans, so worshipers traded the dark colors of mourning for much happier and brighter colors of spring.
In the 1870s, the New York Easter Parade began. Women and men decked out in their newest and most fashionable clothing would strut their stuff up and down New York’s tony Fifth Avenue. The parade became one of the premier events of fashion design and apparel retailers soon leveraged the parade’s popularity and used Easter as a marketing tool to sell fancy garments. The holiday, in terms of clothing retail sales, practically became as important as Christmas and toy sales.
Today, people still enjoy donning elegant clothing on Eater Sunday. To that end, below please find where you can find the best Easter finery - for the entire family - that A.C. has to offer.
