The International Swimming Hall of Fame biography of Esther Williams (AKA Hollywood’s “Million Dollar Mermaid”), who passed away earlier this month, said this of the film legend: "Her movie career played a major role in the promotion of swimming, making it attractive to the public, contributing to the growth of the sport as a public recreation for health, exercise, water safety -- and just plain fun."
This week we give a nod to this starlet who made a splash by swimming in MGM movies after her first dream became unfulfilled -- to participate on the U.S. Swim Team in the 1940 Olympics. (She would have been there had they not been canceled due to the onset of World War II.)
Esther Williams, the all-American bathing beauty, was as glamorous as she was athletic. In her movie extravaganzas, she’d look absolutely radiant in an evening gown, but she really shined in a swimsuit.
So channel your inner Esther Williams (sorry, dudes – no male equivalent here) and dive right into the following A.C. shops for today’s hottest swimwear trends.
TOMMY BAHAMA (THE PIER SHOPS AT CAESARS)
Perhaps the beach-iest of all lifestyle brands, Tommy Bahama has some pretty women’s swimwear options. Sophisticated, classic styles as well as fun jaw-dropping pieces can be found here this season. All of which provide great support and coverage. We like the V-neck Navy one-piece with lace side panels for a dramatic, elegant look. It features wide shoulder straps and a comfortable, supportive tummy-control panel.
Tommy Bahama also has some great swimwear options for men that are not to be missed -- from functional cargo-style hybrid bottoms to fun trunks with cool and exciting prints.
AKA (THE QUARTER AT TROPICANA)
Leave it to AKA at The Quarter to have everything a guy needs for the beach from hats, flip-flops, sunglasses and more. But it’s their selection of swim trunks that will really float your boat. Look for an array of colors and prints, as well as “amphibious” shorts, by brands such as Xzavier ($48), Micros ($54), Hugo Boss Swim ($88) and Tommy Bahama ($78-$88).
Super sexy ENextDoor has racy bikinis that can easily take you from the sands at Chelsea to coast of Capri. One particular suit that we adore is Roberto Cavalli’s Reversible Bikini. With its skimpy reversible electric blue/leopard print triangle top, to its equally tiny electric blue bottom ($250, also available in white for $260), this cosmopolitan swimsuit is ideal for a gal who’s not afraid to show a little (or a lot of) skin. For those who are slightly more demure, cover up with Roberto Cavalli’s gorgeous matching bat-winged leopard print Caftan ($550).
STUDIO (THE WATERFRONT SHOPS AT HARRAH’S) & CAESARS EXCLUSIVELY (CAESARS)
Ladies, look for super hot swimsuits at two fab casino shops.
Mix and match fun, youthful bikini tops and bottoms by Sunset for only $25 a piece at Studio. Or get your glam on with gorgeous Gottex one- or two-piece suits, cover-ups and pareos ($80-$278) at Caesars Exclusively.
TOP DRAWER (THE WATERFRONT SHOPS AT HARRAH’S) & CAESARS EXCLUSIVELY (CAESARS)
Men, you can find board shorts from Quiksilver, one of the world’s biggest swim retailers, at Caesars Exclusively and Top Drawer. They carry a wide variety of colors and styles to suit many different tastes. Check out their expanded selection of Amphibians, which are great for dry land, surfing and swimming ($49-$68).
THE BIG DEAL
Tropicana’s White Party Fashion Show
Last week we mentioned Tropicana’s kickoff to summer “White Party” on Friday, June 21. It’s a property-wide event with all kinds of fun retail specials, dining offers, themed beverages and cool nightlife experiences. But it gets even better as they’ve added a fashion show! The fashion show starts at 7 p.m. and will be hosted by SoJo 104.9’s Heather DeLucca. She’ll invite guests (you!) to strut their stuff down the staircase by Starbucks in The Quarter (Central Plaza) to show off their summery white outfits. There’s no charge to participate. Shops such as Signatures, White House Black Market and Caché will, of course, be involved, too.
